    “The First World War Centenary & Remembrance Ceremony” at Horizon Community Theatre, 6th of November.

    The ceremony is open to all in the community, and is an all ticketed events. Tickets are free, and can be ordered from Horizon Community College reception from Monday 13th October 2014.

     CANDYLAND the Dance Show is coming to Horizon on the 25th & 26th November.

     The show promises to be a visual feast for the audience! Spectators will be treated to a pick n mix of performances featuring lots of different styles of dance from Hip Hop to Contemporary, Baton to Ballet!

    The show is themed around popular sweets and treats, and features pieces of work from students across all year groups and performances from our well-known dance companies Fusion and the StreetKingz.

    Tickets are available from pupil payment point priced at £5 each, as part of the ticket price there will be further yummy treats in store for the audience during the interval. Show starts 7.30pm until 9.30pm

  • OFSTED visit: we’re GOOD!

    Horizon has received a glowing report from OFSTED, following a visit at the end of the summer term. The college was judged ‘Good’ in all categories. The report - a copy of which can be seen here – notes that, ‘Attainment has improved rapidly in all year groups since the College opened’, and that, ‘…students make good progress in mathematics and English’. In addition the report states that, ‘Progress in all other subjects shows an equally positive picture’. Proud Principal, Nick Bowen, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted with our OFSTED report and this year’s examination results. They both reflect accurately the huge success that Horizon Community College is having in raising achievement in this area and the positive impact it is having on the local community. The very good report and examination results gives us the perfect platform to push on to be outstanding and to really ensure a bright future for our young people and for the community of Barnsley’.

    Fantastic Exam Results – Again!

    Horizon are celebrating a second year of fantastic examination results. 72% of students achieved A*- C in Maths and 72% of students achieved A*- C in English. These results are extremely good and continue to exceed the national average.

  • Horizon Students at Swanage Folk Festival

    Students and staff had an amazing time visiting Swanage on the south coast for the annual Folk Festival over the weekend. 36 students from Y8/9 represented the college, performing routines that they have been working on all year.

    Friday 4 July was a special day for Horizon Community College; HRH Princess Anne dropped by after visiting Citizen’s Advice Bureau in the town centre and Riding for the Disabled.

    Principal Nick Bowen said “it’s great for Barnsley that the Princess Royal is visiting and she will visit Horizon, the biggest of Barnsley’s fantastic new school buildings”.

    Over the last 6 Months more than 40 students from Year 10 have took part in the IKIC Barnsley Big Challenge.

    The Business Challenge is aimed at teaching our young people entrepreneurial skills that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. During the last 2 editions of “The Horizon” we have kept our readers up to date with the developments of the challenge.

    Last week saw Horizon Community College perform its second, large-scale annual musical.

    Director, Mrs Storey and producer, Miss Dix, were both thrilled with the show. As Mrs Storey explains, “the result was better than we could have ever envisioned and this is due to both the attitude and performances of our students and the support of a great team of staff.”

  • National Enterpise Challenge - 5-09 pmUK’S Most Enterprising School

    On Tuesday 1st July Mr Robson, Mr Powell and a talented group of year 8 students went to the Trentham Estate in Staffordshire to compete in the National Enterprise Championship 2014. At the beginning of the year over 20.000 students took part in a bespoke enterprise challenge and our year 8 team managed to win a prestigious place in the National Finals.

    After pitching their unique product to business executives the team had the privilege to listen to a question and answer session with business guru and dragon’s den star Theo Paphitis.
