On Monday 29th September a number of Horizon students collected their I Know I Can Special Achievement Awards at the Holiday Inn Barnsley. It was an amazing event with the Mayor of Barnsley, Angela Smith MP and Dan Jarvis MP in attendance.
The stars of the event were the young people from year 11 who collected their awards. These students have shown ambition and dedication not only to their studies in school, but they have also had an impact on their communities, doing voluntary work, campaigning, raising funds for charity and also running businesses! ......
The pupils in Candyland show have been amazing, fantastic, wonderful.... I could go on.... over the two nights and were a credit to the school. They have been a pleasure to work with and as a dance department we are so proud and have been blown away by all their performances and sheer hard work that has been put into the show.We have also raised around £800 for Sheffield children's hospital. A special thanks is owed to Nataile Kerr for arranging and organising all this. I have never seen show refreshments look so stunning. The show also wouldn't have been possible without the amazing Theatre Technicians: Jim and Alex. Thank you again for all your hardwork and support you have given. Thank you to all involved - Miss. Martin - Head Of Dance
Horizon has received a glowing report from OFSTED, following a visit at the end of the summer term. The college was judged ‘Good’ in all categories. The report - a copy of which can be seen here – notes that, ‘Attainment has improved rapidly in all year groups since the College opened’, and that, ‘…students make good progress in mathematics and English’. In addition the report states that, ‘Progress in all other subjects shows an equally positive picture’. Proud Principal, Nick Bowen, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted with our OFSTED report and this year’s examination results. They both reflect accurately the huge success that Horizon Community College is having in raising achievement in this area and the positive impact it is having on the local community. The very good report and examination results gives us the perfect platform to push on to be outstanding and to really ensure a bright future for our young people and for the community of Barnsley’.
Horizon are celebrating a second year of fantastic examination results. 72% of students achieved A*- C in Maths and 72% of students achieved A*- C in English. These results are extremely good and continue to exceed the national average.
Friday 4 July was a special day for Horizon Community College; HRH Princess Anne dropped by after visiting Citizen’s Advice Bureau in the town centre and Riding for the Disabled.
Principal Nick Bowen said “it’s great for Barnsley that the Princess Royal is visiting and she will visit Horizon, the biggest of Barnsley’s fantastic new school buildings”.
On Tuesday 1st July Mr Robson, Mr Powell and a talented group of year 8 students went to the Trentham Estate in Staffordshire to compete in the National Enterprise Championship 2014. At the beginning of the year over 20.000 students took part in a bespoke enterprise challenge and our year 8 team managed to win a prestigious place in the National Finals.
After pitching their unique product to business executives the team had the privilege to listen to a question and answer session with business guru and dragon’s den star Theo Paphitis.
